Transformative Land Investment

Introduction

Sustainable food systems that feed the world, support local communities, and protect ecosystems require that more transformative investment practices are mainstreamed across the business community. The Transformative Land Investment (TLI) project fosters mainstreaming by working with investors, the national business ecosystem, and global and regional development communities. This involves a multi-pronged approach that aims to drive innovation simultaneously and in coordination across three levels: investment; national business ecosystems; and the global development community.

The TLI project works with investors and other stakeholders to support adoption of inclusive business and agroecology practices. By securing land tenure and livelihoods of 300 000 rural people, the initiative will contribute to Switzerland’s global effort towards more sustainable food systems.

Aim

The project adopts an integrated and holistic approach involving coordinated actions that:

  • Prevent negative Land-Based Investment (LBI) impacts
  • Manage how impacts play out
  • Incentivize LBI adoption of better business models and practices
  • Support LBIs in improving their business models and implementation

Project Scope and Timeline

The TLI project runs from 2022-2025 and is implemented across Ethiopia, Ghana, Laos, Mozambique, and Myanmar.

Modality

The objectives of the TLI project will be achieved by:

  1. Out- and up-scaling TLIs that avoid negative societal impacts and contribute towards more inclusive and resilient food systems.
  2. Establishing country-level policies and supportive regulatory frameworks, laws and incentive schemes that enable investor adoption of TLI principles.
  3. Establishing global and regional agreements, commitments and guidelines that more effectively promote TLI.
