On 17 December 2024, the Transformative Partnership Platform for Agroecology (AE-TPP) held its third AE-TPP Dialogue “Measuring What Matters – to foster Agroecological Transitions”. The fully online workshop which brought together over 252 participants, presented recent developments and innovations in the area of metrics for agroecology through the Holistic Localized Performance Assessment (HOLPA) tool and the Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE); the event presented novel evidence on the performance of agroecological farms and farmers; and introduced resources to support diverse users design contextually relevant agrifood systems assessments.
The event opened with a warm welcome from Fergus Sinclair, Co-Convenor of the Agroecology TPP, followed by opening remarks from Marion Michaud of the European Commission’s DG INTPA, who emphasized the importance of holistic metrics in driving agroecological transitions.
The session featured a series of presentations showcasing diverse experiences and lessons from the field, which set the stage for an interactive panel discussion where participants engaged directly with the speakers to reflect on opportunities and challenges for scaling holistic metrics. It also included group discussions, where participants explored the relevance and utility of the tools presented, organized around four key themes. Field and farm-level assessments, selecting metrics for different purposes, balancing locally appropriate vs. globally comparable metrics and landscape and food systems assessments.
